About The Book
This collection of stories from 25 ethnically, spiritually and religiously diverse women from around the world, all displaced from their homelands (sometimes voluntarily, sometimes forced) are authentic life experiences we all need to understand.
Each woman has overcome challenges – some greater than others. They landed among people with whom they had no shared history – people with no knowledge of their history, perhaps no interest even in their history. They live in a parallel universe, happily settled and successful in their adopted country. Yet they grieve the loss of their identity and cultural heritage, harbouring a silent loneliness and a longing for what might have been.
Drawing on their own experiences, each has reached out to help others struggling with language barriers, isolation, cultural differences, violence, and hardship.
Reading these very personal stories reminds us that, no matter where we come from, we really are no different from each other. We all have the same aspirations for our families – peace, education, opportunity and a sense of belonging.
At a time of catastrophic global displacement of people, this kind of storytelling is more important than ever and a powerful tool for understanding.
