Carillon Recitals during Memorial Week

November 4 November 11

Saturday 4 November 2023 11.30am: Carillon Society of Australia Celebration Recital

Carillonists from Australia will converge in Bathurst to perform a recital celebrating 90 years of the Bathurst War Memorial Carillon.

A feature of the recital, beginning at 11.30am, will be performances of pieces written especially for the Bathurst carillon. These include the acclaimed duet, ‘Gently Does It’ by Thomas Laue, composed for carillon and the change ringing bells of All Saints Cathedral – a world first composition.

The recital will also feature a performance of the piece commissioned by the Inland Sea of Sound, ‘Of Waves and Calm Seas’ composed by Daniel Guo. Both these pieces will be performed by the composers, along with other pieces performed by Australian carillonists as they mark this momentous occasion in Bathurst.

Monday – Friday 6th – 10th November – Memorial Week Lunchtime Recitals 1pm (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday) and an Evening recital at 6pm on Tuesday

Each day this week, to mark Memorial Week and this year the 90th Anniversary of the Bathurst War Memorial Carillon, Bathurst Carillonists Denise Garland, Jennifer Roberts and Wendy Murphy will play a recital.

The listening public will be treated to a variety of pieces as the carillonists bring the singing tower to life all week for the enjoyment of Bathurst, and marking 90 years of the Bathurst War Memorial Carillon. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, these recitals will be in conjunction with tours of the carillon. A rare opportunity to learn the fascinating history of Bathurst War Memorial Carillon, explore the three floors, meet one of our local carillonists and enjoy the playing of the instrument from within the clavier room.

Saturday 11 November approx. 11.15am: Remembrance Day Recital

Following the Remembrance Day service and observances, Bathurst carillonists will perform a selection of pieces as the conclusion to Memorial Week.

In its third year, Memorial week is the week in November encompassing Remembrance Day and marking the anniversary of the Bathurst War Memorial Carillon, which in 2023 is the 90th anniversary. The public will be treated to a performance of music by Bathurst carillonist Jennifer Roberts, that commemorates, celebrates and entertains and most importantly, marks this milestone in the history of one of the most recognisable cultural icons in Bathurst.
