Step back in time 170 years and experience the rich heritage of the Burton family at Settlers Rest. James Burton (1793) was transported as a convict to Sydney Cove in 1816 aboard the “Atlas III”. In 1828 he and his wife Elizabeth received a Free Settler’s Land Grant at O’Connell and reared 6 children. Their eldest son, James and his wife Mary purchased the property in 1856. They built their family home and reared ten children.
The Convict’s Great Great Grandson now welcomes you to the property. Visit the Slab Hut home, see family artefacts including 1867 penny, antique piano, gramophone and crockery. The Memorial Garden honours the past and features the original plum tree planted in 1856.
Six generations later the Burton family have a stunning family home, with majestic views of the O’Connell Valley. Wander through the manicured country garden and enjoy morning tea in the Garden Gazebo with freshly baked scones, jam and cream, leaf tea and brewed coffee.
