Settler’s Rest Est. 1856 Historical Farm Tour

Step back in time and experience the rich heritage of the property “Settler’s Rest”, where the Burton family have lived for six generations.

Their story begins when James Burton (1793) was transported as a convict to Sydney Cove in 1816 aboard the “Atlas III”. In 1828, he and his wife, Elizabeth, received a Free Settler’s Land Grant at O’Connell Plains, NSW, and raised six children.

In 1856, their eldest son James and his wife Mary purchased the property, “Settler’s Rest”. They built their family home and reared ten children.

The Convict’s Great-Great-Grandson now welcomes you to the property. Visit the Slab Hut home and see family artefacts including an 1867 penny, antique piano and gramophone, old cast iron stove and the dinner table set with 100 year old crockery. The plum tree in the vegetable garden was planted when the original home was built in 1856 and the Memorial Garden features plaques honouring the life and legacy of previous Burton generations. Vintage farm machinery is also on display.

Six generations later the Burton family have established a grand new family home on the property, with majestic views of the O’Connell Valley. Wander through the manicured country garden and enjoy morning tea in the Garden Gazebo with freshly baked scones, jam and cream, leaf tea and brewed coffee.
