SUMMARY:Sally Gould In Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join paramedic and author Sally Gould for a conversation on her insightful memoir Frog. Sally has been a paramedic for 14 years and is a CSU Alumna.\nBookings essential: ph 6333 6281\n\nLife as a paramedic can be traumatic\, gross\, dull\, hilarious and magical. But behind the sirens\, and the life-or-death scenes\, and the absurdity of non-urgent callouts\, a paramedic’s career is very different to how most people imagine it.\nBased on years of meticulously kept journals\, Frog is an intimate look at the human cost of the job and the cumulative effect of trauma.\n\nCopies of the book will be for sale on the night.\n\nAbout the author\nSally Gould has been a paramedic for fourteen years and counting\, and still finds joy in her self-proclaimed dream job. The professional and personal growth she experienced on the frontline\, and the journals she kept during her early years in the field\, were the inspiration for her memoir Frog.\nHer draft manuscript won the narrative non-fiction category in the 2023 ASA/CA Award Mentorship Program.\nWhen she’s not in uniform\, Sally can be found tutoring paramedic students or immersed in her writing. She spends the rest of her days off nurturing herself through running\, bushwalking\, baking\, attending theatre\, and spending time with family and friends. Sally lives in Sydney with her husband and their two children.

It’s hardly surprising we feel that way. Our politics is polarised\, our online world is awash with misinformation\, and we’ve lost faith in our bedrock institutions. Yet\, without trust\, we cannot work together to solve the big problems we face. But there is a way back. A way to rediscover trust in our leaders and institutions. A way to tackle the doubt. This insightful collection of essays brings together top thinkers from across the globe in media\, science\, government\, academia and business to examine how and why trust is disappearing\, and how we might navigate these confusing times. From expert minds in business\, science and law enforcement the book explains how to maintain trust and how easily it can be broken\, and leaders on the front line of technological development describe the influence of bots\, conspiracy theories and generative AI.If we are to address the big issues facing our world\, then we must have trust\, because without it we have no sense of shared reality. Alone\, we can’t do it. Together\, we might. \nAbout the authorsTracey Kirkland is an Australian news journalist who has worked in broadcast and print for more than 30 years. SUMMARY:Where Angels Fear to Tread - Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Hear Sylvia Rapley-Anderson in conversation about her book ‘Where Angels Fear to Tread’. \nAbout the bookIn 1973\, a small group of parents and health professionals set out to overturn the inhumane and rigid treatment children received in hospitals around the country. To do this\, they formed the Association for the Welfare of Children in Hospital (AWCH)\, and their vision was to put the welfare of the child at the centre of every decision that was made about them. \nSylvia was one of the founders of AWCH.This is her story of those three years that transformed children’s hospital care forever. \nSylvia is an ex Bathurst Local\, having lived and worked in the region in the 1970s. Copies of the book will be available to purchase on the night. \nBookings are essential to secure a seat. Call 6333 6281.

SUMMARY:The dark web: a foray into fungal realms with Dr Alison Pouliot
DESCRIPTION:Bookings are essential: call 6333 6281 \nJoin ecologist\, mycologist\, photographer\, Dr Alison Pouliot in an exploration of the dark web beneath our feet. \nLike the online dark web\, the clandestine workings of fungi in the subterrain are also hidden. Mycologists – scientists who study fungi – are starting to make sense of how they operate\, but the detail of their activities and the players involved largely remains a mystery.\nAlthough little known\, the roots of almost every plant in the Australian landscape are intimately entwined with fungi. Fungi not only help plants access water and nutrients but also increase their resistance to drought and disease. They build architecture in soils\, aerate them\, and allow water to gently percolate to deeper horizons.\nIn this highly interactive seminar\, we’ll explore these unruly fungal renegades and how they contravene the frameworks we use to understand life\, but also how they might inspire the innovative thinking needed to navigate an uncertain future.\nAlison will also share some stories from her adventures during the writing of her new book\, Funga Obscura: Photo Journeys Among Fungi. \nCopies of Alison’s books will be available for purchase.
