SUMMARY:From Taboo To Zeitgeist: Menopause Is Not A Use By Date
DESCRIPTION:Bathurst Library and Central West Women’s Health Centre Present\nA 2025 Women’s Health Week Event \nFrom Taboo To Zeitgeist\nMenopause Is Not A Use By Date \nAuthor Panel Conversation 3pm – 5pm\, $5pp\nMenopause\, once a whispered topic\, is now entering mainstream through comedy\, musicals\, and\, increasingly\, literature. This shift reflects evolving societal attitudes\, but more importantly\, it prompts us to examine how these extra decades are truly being lived.\nIt’s time to discard the outdated notion that women are shelved once they move into older age. Contemporary novels are embracing life\, love\, and sexuality in later years\, proving that aging isn’t about fading away—it’s about soaring.\nAudience questions and comments are welcome to foster discussion and conversation. \nWriting Workshop 5pm – 7pm\, $5pp\nIn our increasingly isolated society\, everyone has a story to tell\, but not everyone has the confidence to share. That’s where Readers Are Writers workshops come in. Presented by all three authors\, the workshop will refer back to the conversation from the panel\, covering central themes and discussion points.\nLight refreshments will be available between the sessions.

SUMMARY:Author Talk - Age of Doubt

This collection looks at the moral and ethical foundations our institutions are built on and shines a light on the media and its role in sorting fact from fiction.Bookings essential: 6333 6281 \nCopies of the book will be for sale on the night. \nAbout the bookToday\, trust seems harder to find than ever before. It’s hardly surprising we feel that way. Our politics is polarised\, our online world is awash with misinformation\, and we’ve lost faith in our bedrock institutions. Yet\, without trust\, we cannot work together to solve the big problems we face. But there is a way back. A way to rediscover trust in our leaders and institutions. A way to tackle the doubt. This insightful collection of essays brings together top thinkers from across the globe in media\, science\, government\, academia and business to examine how and why trust is disappearing\, and how we might navigate these confusing times. From expert minds in business\, science and law enforcement the book explains how to maintain trust and how easily it can be broken\, and leaders on the front line of technological development describe the influence of bots\, conspiracy theories and generative AI.If we are to address the big issues facing our world\, then we must have trust\, because without it we have no sense of shared reality. Alone\, we can’t do it. Together\, we might. \nAbout the authorsTracey Kirkland is an Australian news journalist who has worked in broadcast and print for more than 30 years. SUMMARY:The dark web: a foray into fungal realms with Dr Alison Pouliot
DESCRIPTION:Bookings are essential: call 6333 6281 \nJoin ecologist\, mycologist\, photographer\, Dr Alison Pouliot in an exploration of the dark web beneath our feet. \nLike the online dark web\, the clandestine workings of fungi in the subterrain are also hidden. Mycologists – scientists who study fungi – are starting to make sense of how they operate\, but the detail of their activities and the players involved largely remains a mystery.\nAlthough little known\, the roots of almost every plant in the Australian landscape are intimately entwined with fungi. Fungi not only help plants access water and nutrients but also increase their resistance to drought and disease. They build architecture in soils\, aerate them\, and allow water to gently percolate to deeper horizons.\nIn this highly interactive seminar\, we’ll explore these unruly fungal renegades and how they contravene the frameworks we use to understand life\, but also how they might inspire the innovative thinking needed to navigate an uncertain future.\nAlison will also share some stories from her adventures during the writing of her new book\, Funga Obscura: Photo Journeys Among Fungi. \nCopies of Alison’s books will be available for purchase.
