SUMMARY:Workshop // Experimental Mark Making with Rebecca Sciroli
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 21 February\, 10:30am-12:30pm \n$10 members\, $15 non-members\, ALL AGES\, no experience required\, Bookings essential \nJoin Rebecca Sciroli\, a We Are Studios artist\, for an immersive and playful workshop that invites you to refresh your relationship with artmaking. This experimental session encourages artists to reconnect with joy\, curiosity and process through interactive exploration. Working with recycled\, found and everyday materials\, participants will invent their own drawing and painting tools and experiment with mark making using materials including paint\, ink\, charcoal and pastel. This relaxed and supportive workshop is ideal for artists\, art lovers and anyone interested in experimentation\, play and discovering new techniques to add to their creative toolbox. \nThis workshop is supported by We Are Studios. \nAbout the Artist\nRebecca (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist\, facilitator and advocate. She works primarily in sculpture and installation\, wearables\, performance\, painting and drawing. Rebecca’s work often touches on memory and emotional connection through sensory stimuli\, femininity\, sensuality and empowering feminist work. The fine balance of fragility and resilience is explored through Rebecca’s conceptual and performative practice\, expressed through a sensory connection of energy and touch. Rebecca uses improvised experimental drawing devices (IEDD) for mark making that records her disabled body and how it can move. Rebecca has an ongoing practice of producing self-portraits throughout her recovery from a D.V. assault\, and life in a disabled body. Rebecca is an artist and board member at We Are Studios. \nAbout the Exhibition\nWe Are Studios: Acts of Inheritance\nActs of Inheritance presents new work from seventeen Disabled artists who explore identity as something lived\, layered and continually remade. We come to know ourselves through small\, everyday acts and performances – our own and those of others\, families\, cultures and communities as they leave their mark upon us. Some artists revisit family stories or inherited acts; others reflect on Disability\, mental health\, and shifting perceptions of self and how we perform it. Here\, inheritance is not fixed or predetermined\, but enacted through the choices we make\, the stories we tell and the ways we show up for one another. \nThrough these works\, Acts of Inheritance invites us to imagine identity as something performed in ongoing dialogue between who we have been\, who we are becoming and the worlds that shape us. \nWe Are Studios is a 100% Disability-led\, artist-run initiative empowering Disabled Western Sydney artists to thrive. \nArtists: Aili Brenton\, Virginia Bucknell\, Ria Cirera-Cruz\, Taylah Devlin\, Holly-lee Dickson\, Georgina Evans\, Nina Frankie\, Leanne Larwood\, Timothy W. Martin\, Grazia Napoletano\, Adrienne Proud\, Rebecca Sciroli\, Kiri Smith\, Jane Thatcher\, Miah Tito-Barratt\, Jordan Valageorgiou\, Eden Young. \nCurated by We Are Studios Collective. \nThe project is supported by the New South Wales Government through Create NSW and by the Australian Government through Creative Australia\, its principal arts investment and advisory body. \nBanner image courtesy Rebecca Sciroli and We Are Studios.
