SUMMARY:Exhibition Tours
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the gallery each Saturday during our current exhibitions\, for a free guided tour! \nSaturdays\, 11am\nFREE\, all welcome\, RSVP online or at BRAG reception \nOur current suite of exhibitions includes: \nA Tear in the Fabric presents new and existing works from nine Asian and Asian Australian artists who embrace distortion as a mode of disruption. In partnership with 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art\, the exhibition revolves around notions of aesthetic\, material and conceptual interventions integrated into established forms of creative practice. Picking at the seams to make space for new narratives and artistic approaches\, we see exploratory excursions into concepts of place\, materiality\, memory\, identity and perception\, manifesting in a diverse range of mediums. \nTea Ceremony in the Celestial Garden\, is reminiscent of the famous Japanese food display ‘shokuhin sampuru’ or French pastries display in Paris\, the cakes are mouth-watering\, but not for consumption. The construction of the cakes in ceramics is labour-intensive\, down to each sprinkle of hundreds and thousands. Their imaginary forms conjure a colourful\, dream-like world. This project was created during a 2025 artist residency at the PumpHouse Albury. \nLandscapes of Imagination: From the Collection\, bringing together works from the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery Collection that reflect the enduring artistic allure of Hill End. This historic village has captured the imaginations of artists drawn to its layered histories\, dramatic terrain\, and evocative sense of place. \nImage: Jayanto Tan\, Berries Cream Tarts\, 2025\, ceramic\, 9 x 26 x 26 x 26 cm. SUMMARY:Peel Jam 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join the Peel community for the annual fundraiser for the Peel Recreation Reserve at the 14th Peel Jam for a laid back afternoon in the grounds of the old school hall. 2025 will see more than 50 musicians\, two fabulous local artists (all artworks for sale)\, artisan stallholders\, Renzaglias Wines and Cosmo Brewing\, Robi’s Kitchen and the Peel RFS\, taking their catering to new heights in 2025. $10 per person\, $20 per family (two adults and children under 18). Family friendly event just 15 minutes north of Bathurst. This is a pet-free event. The grounds themselves are fully accessible\, and there is an accessible toilet on the grounds. The old school hall (circa 1856) unfortunately pre-dates access so the art exhibition might be tricky for those in chairs.

SUMMARY:School Holidays // Cakes and Clay!
DESCRIPTION:Join Indonesian artist Jayanto Tan for a fun workshop for children and parents/guardians!\n\nTaste a variety of cakes and then recreate them in air dry clay! Inspired by Jayanto’s exhibition\, Tea Ceremony in the Celestial Garden\, get creative as a family and take home your own air-dry clay sculpture.\n\nDate & Time: Saturday 4 October\, 10:30am-12:30pm\n\nAges: Children 6-17 + Parent/Guardian\n\nBathurst Regional Art Gallery (BRAG) presents Tea Ceremony in the Celestial Garden by Jayanto Tan.\n\nColourfully crafted confections tantalise the viewer from inside glass cabinets in Tea Ceremony in the Celestial Garden. Reminiscent of the famous Japanese food display ‘shokuhin sampuru’ or French pastries display in Paris\, the cakes are mouth-watering\, but not for consumption. The construction of the cakes in ceramics is labour-intensive\, down to each sprinkle of hundreds and thousands. Their imaginary forms conjure a colourful\, dream-like world. This project was created during a 2025 artist residency at the PumpHouse Albury.\n\nGrowing up in a large farming family in Indonesia\, the artist has many memories of gatherings in the kitchen\, cooking\, sharing stories\, laughing\, singing\, and drinking tea. Cake was a luxury even for formal occasions like birthday parties\, baby showers\, weddings\, and funerals. Tan reflects on those bittersweet memories. Even though the family may not have been able to afford cakes like these\, they are offered here with humour and love.\n\nThe mystery of cake\, fake or real\, lies under the heavy icing and elaborate decoration. The cakes are pretty to look at but carry weight underneath. Each glass cabinet is securely locked\, and the objects can’t be touched. For the artist\, looking through the glass exposes the fragility of raw human material covered in makeup\, like late-night performers.\n\nThe garden that the artist has created\, to honour family and friends who have deceased\, explores Tan’s personal narrative of identity\, longing\, queerness\, lost family\, memorial\, and self-destruction\, here portrayed through alienation\, fantasy\, and desire in a peaceful dreamland.Tea Ceremony in the Celestial Garden is a space where friends and family from the past\, and Gallery visitors in the present\, can mingle to envision the future.\n\nThis exhibition is dedicated to my beautiful mother. – Jayanto Tan\n\nImage: Jayanto Tan\, Berries Cream Tarts\, 2025\, ceramic\, 9 x 26 x 26 x 26 cm. SUMMARY:Talks & Tea // ESSSENSSSE
DESCRIPTION:TALKS & TEA // ESSSENSSSE\nJoin Bathurst Regional Art Gallery (BRAG) Volunteer Guides for a spotlight talk and walk through of exhibition ESSSENSSSE! \nThis is a social series for visitors to learn more about the current exhibitions\, Bathurst’s vibrant art scene\, and to meet like-minded locals!\nWednesday 9 July and 13 August\n10:30am – 12pm\nFREE\, refreshments provided by donation online or at gallery reception \nAbout the exhibition:\nBathurst Regional Art Gallery (BRAG) presents ESSSENSSSE\, a joyful work about healing and new beginnings by acclaimed contemporary artist HOSSEI (NSW)\, guest curated by Tesha Malott.\nESSSENSSSE is an aquatic ecosystem that explores the tenacity of the human spirit\, stripping away corporeal human qualities and revealing what’s underneath. ESSSENSSSE follows HOSSEI’s exploration of creating costumes that ‘heal’. Featuring a cast of 16 other-worldly sea creatures\, ESSSENSSSE transitions from a series of dynamic and joyful performances into a sensory\, large-scale installation\, in which visitors are surrounded by a playful\, 100% tactile landscape.\nESSSENSSSE began when HOSSEI became fascinated by the sand dollar sea creatures— their shape\, features\, and how in mediaeval times it was truly believed that sand dollars were mermaid currency. When looking at the sand dollar\, HOSSEI realised that if you were to remove the physical characteristics of a human body\, you would be left with a mouth and an anus\, just like the sand dollar. It is this idea that compelled HOSSEI to make the sand dollar an emblem of the show. An entry point and an exit\, not just with food\, but in the sense of discerning which energies come through and nourish the insides\, and which are let out. ESSSENSSSE is about letting go and being one with the spirit and embracing its purity and vulnerability. \nA Verge Gallery exhibition\, touring in partnership with Museums & Galleries of NSW\, supported by the University of Sydney and proudly funded by the NSW Government. Verge Gallery is supported by the University of Sydney Union. \nImage: HOSSEI\, ESSSENSSSE\, 2023. Performer Lauren Booker. Dimensions variable. Photography by Jacquie Manning.
