Bathurst Writers’ & Readers’ Festival
April 30, 2021 @ 10:00 am – 6:30 pm
The Bathurst Writers’ & Readers’ Festival makes a return in 2021!
The Bathurst Writers’ & Readers’ Festival is to commence on Friday 30th April and is to conclude on Sunday May 2nd. The program for 2021 consists of three days of live streamed events direct from the Sydney Writers’ Festival (SWF), along with a program of local author talks.
One of the highlights, the ‘Great Festival Read’, or big Bathurst Book Club, sees book lovers read the same book in the lead-up to the festival weekend. This year’s book is Kate Kelly by Hill End based writer and artist, Rebecca Wilson. This moving biography tells Kate Kelly’s astonishing story in full.
The book will be discussed by a local panel featuring Tracey Callinan, Rob Willis, Danielle Hart & Sarah Gurich. Everyone is encouraged to read Kate Kelly and come along to the session on Sunday 3rd May at 9.45am. The author, Rebecca Wilson, will also be in-conversation about the book following this session.
Other local sessions include author Tracy Sorensen chatting with editors Meg Keneally and Leah Kaminsky about Animals Make Us Human, a collection of some of Australia’s best authors writing about nature after the 2019-2020 bushfires; and Toby Finlayson discussing the inspirational collection of poems from hip-hop song lyrics, Homeland Calling, written by First Nations youth from communities all around Australia.
Some of the International and Australian writers appearing by live stream direct from SWF include Helen Garner, Judy Blume, Laura Tingle, Richard Flanagan, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson, Michael Robotham, Kerry O’Brien, Scott Ludlum, Michelle de Kretser and Judith Lucy. One fun highlight will see Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton discuss movie adaptations of Australian books.
The program for the Festival is available online from BMEC (www.bmec.com.au) and in printed form from BooksPlus & BMEC. Make sure to grab hold of a copy and come and enjoy this wonderful free local event.
