O'Connell

O’Connell makes a lovely day trip for foodies and history buffs alike. Located an easy 20 minute drive from Bathurst’s town centre, you’ll know you’ve reached this charming town when you drive under the leafy canopy of Desert Ash trees, planted to commemorate locals who fought and lost their lives in World War I.

Things to Do

  • Grab a bite at O’Connell Avenue Café and Deli (2431 O’Connell Road, O’Connell, 0424 831 801), a little country café with an extensive menu serving breakfast and brunch options. Sit outside by the fireplace or inside to enjoy the rustic charm of the rich terracotta and pale yellow walls while you feast on blueberry pancakes, cottage pie, and homemade baked goods all sourced locally, including coffee from Fish River Roasters.

  • For the perfect glass of Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz, visit family owned and operated Renzaglia Wines (38 Bosworth Falls, O’Connell, 02 6337 5756). Have a chat with local owner Mark Renzaglia, an award-winning winemaker, and don’t forget to grab a bottle or two to toast your trip that evening.

Fun Fact

Up until 1837, O’Connell Road was used as the original route for motorists when travelling between Bathurst and Sydney before the
Great Western Highway linked Sydney to the Central Tablelands region.
