When travelling north towards Sofala or Hill End, the beautiful country village of Wattle Flat is a perfect place to plan a stop. The impressive stone buildings stand as a memory of when up to 40,000 called the town home at the height of the gold rush.
Things to Do
- The Bronze Thong is an institution making Wattle Flat the spiritual home of thong racing. A family focused festival that will answer the question in 2018; can we get back the Guinness World Record for the most number of people in a race wearing thongs from the USA?
- Explore the village streets and historic buildings with A Stroll through Wattle Flat, a self-guided walk that was planned by members of the Wattle Flat community.
- The Wattle Flat Heritage Lands are a 250 hectare remnant bush-land reserve right next to the town. The evidence of past gold mining can be clearly seen, as can the rare Argyle Apple, a distinctive Eucalypt with attractive blue-grey foliage.
Within the Wattle Flat race track is a well maintained, and rather unexpected, nine-hole golf course open to the public for casual golf any time.
