Hill End

Once a booming gold town, Hill End today is a blend of heritage buildings, art, and gold mine relics.

In the 1870s, rich gold discoveries rapidly transformed Hill End from a small rural community into one of the largest inland towns in NSW during that period.

Since then, the town has become known for being an artistic hub – Brett Whiteley, John Olsen, Donald Friend and Russell Drysdale all found themselves inspired by the village’s historic charm and landscapes in the 60s and 70s. The Hill End Artists In Residence program run by Bathurst Regional Art Gallery keeps the artistic energy alive and well in the town today.

Located 74km north (just over an hours’ scenic drive) from Bathurst, Hill End makes the perfect day trip for visitors wanting to learn more about Australia’s gold rush or indulge in the beauty of the town’s historic architecture and landscapes. Browse over 10,000 fascinating gold rush era artefacts, and 175 metres of restored underground mine. Or try your luck with gold panning on a guided tour.

Gold Panning

Head to Tambaroora Creek, 10 minutes' drive north of Hill End village. This area is designated for public fossicking. Try gold panning for yourself, or learn the tricks of the trade with a local guide.

Camping at Hill End

Hill End Historic Site is preserved by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. You can camp at either the Village Campground or Glendora Campground. Normal park rules apply.

Explore this interpretive museum at your own pace. A great starting point to take in the history through photographs, artefacts and an interactive demonstration of life on the goldfields.
