ACCC releases free online education program for small businesses
Under Australian competition and consumer laws, small businesses have a number of obligations when dealing with their customers and other businesses. Small businesses also have certain rights and protections under the law.
The ACCC has released a free online education program for small businesses to help you learn about your rights and obligations under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (CCA).
The program is a simple, interactive learning resource which provides a broad overview of the key provisions of the CCA. It includes 10 modules covering topics such as pricing, advertising, consumer rights, selling safe products, unlawful competition and scams.
Each module should take about 15-20 minutes to complete and you don't have to do them all-you can select the ones most relevant to your business operations. Most of the modules include a short self-assessment quiz where you can test your understanding of the topic.
'The ACCC is committed to helping businesses understand their rights and responsibilities under the CCA. We recognise that small business operators are busy running their businesses, and need simple, clear information which can be accessed at any time, at their own pace', says ACCC Deputy Chair Dr Michael Schaper.
‘I strongly encourage small businesses to take advantage of this free, easy-to-use online education program to ensure they are aware of all the protections and obligations they have.'
The free online education program for small business is available at www.ccaeducationprograms.org.
The Business Blend
Welcome to the Business Blend - where the focus is on you growing your business through powerful education, coaching and a network of like- minded business owners and leaders in your community.
What is the Business Blend?
In business it is so easy to be consumed by the day to day activity of the business, rather than setting time aside to work ON the business. And we all know that we really only make lasting improvements to our business when we work ON it rather than just IN it.
With that in mind the Business Blend was created to provide business owners and leaders, just like you, with a timeout, once a month, to have a good look at your business from the outside-in.
"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change"
What happens at the Business Blend?
Every month local business owners and leaders meet for breakfast, education, coaching and networking, led by a professional coach. Typically each meeting will include a live presentation focusing on a key area of your business. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions and bring your own personal perspectives to the discussion. Together you'll discover what works and what doesn't work, and perhaps what's missing in your own business. Following this highly interactive discussion we'll workshop what you've just learned and identify actions you need to take in the next month to improve your business.
"This may be the only structured time you take each month to work ON your business and we want to make it as impactful as possible."
What's in it for me?
Firstly, membership to the Business Blend is a privilege, and whilst anyone can join, we do ask you to engage and contribute for the betterment of the group as a whole. Our desire is that the Blend is a first class local business resource whose entire purpose is to grow the businesses of its members. As a member you'll have the opportunity to:
Promote your business to members of the group. Every month a few members will be asked to briefly address the group to introduce themselves and showcase their business and offerings. This is a great way to increase your sales.
Network within the group. Members are actively encouraged to do business with each other. At the end of the day, people buy from people.
Receive regular education and support to strengthen and grow your business. Through the live presentations, discussions and workshops you'll be able to critically evaluate your business and develop strategies and action items to grow your business.
Who runs the Business Blend?
The Blend meetings are run by Andrew Abel, a professional business and executive coach with more than 20 years business experience, much of which spent in senior management. Andrew is a fully qualified accountant, with Masters and Bachelors degrees in commerce and has trained and been certified as a business coach in both the United States and Australia.
These days he is the Managing Director of Invented Future, a coaching and training firm, focused on growing the businesses of his clients.
I'm not sure this is what I need
We're not going to ask you to join without first experiencing the value of this powerful group. That's why the first visit is on us. Come to the next Blend meeting, meet the people, watch the presentation, engage in the discussion and workshop, and all for free. The only cost to you is breakfast, which you have to have anyway. After the first meeting if you decide to join we'd love to have you in the group, if not then that's fine, and we wish you all the best.
What does it cost?
There are three levels of membership
Sole Trader - $39 monthly. If you're a sole trader this level of membership entitles you to full member status for one person.
SME/Business - $69 monthly. If you're a Small Medium Enterprise/Business (less than 25 staff) this level of membership entitles you and one member of your team to attend each meeting.
Corporate/Sponsor - $99 monthly. If you're a corporate (more than 25 staff) or a sponsor this level of membership entitles you and three members of your team to attend each meeting.
